If there is one thing I’ve been accused of, it’s not sticking in my lane, and writing books all over the romance genre world. Okay, guilty as charged—but I’m okay with it. After twenty-five-plus years of writing romance, I fear I’d grow stale writing the same repetitive genre year after year. So be it!
Romance is a diverse and vibrant genre that offers readers a multitude of experiences and emotions, so why not write many genres and explore even more? Whether you’re a seasoned romance reader or new to the genre, there are a number of romance subgenres to investigate. Each subgenre brings its unique tone, voice, setting, and dynamics to the love stories that capture our hearts.
Historical and/or Time Travel Romance
Historical romance novels transport readers to bygone eras, offering a rich tapestry of history, culture, and timeless love stories. These novels are set in various historical periods, from the Regency era in England to the Wild West in America. Authors like Julia Quinn, known for her Bridgerton series, and Lisa Kleypas, with her Wallflowers series, have mastered the art of weaving historical accuracy with compelling romance. If you enjoy a blend of history and passionate love stories, historical romance is a subgenre you shouldn’t miss.
And let's not forget about Outlander.... Diana Galbadon has cashed in with her multibook and television series. What's not to love?
While I do not write historical romance, I have written historical worlds in my Forever Time Travel Series. Interested in traveling back in time to 1718 pirate era?
Contemporary Romance and Women's Fiction
Contemporary romance is perhaps the most versatile subgenre, as it reflects the complexities and dynamics of modern-day relationships. These stories are set in the present and deal with real-life issues such as career challenges, family dynamics, and societal pressures. Authors like Nora Roberts and Kristan Higgins are well-known for their engaging contemporary romances and women's fiction novels. These subgenres are perfect for readers who want relatable characters and realistic love stories that mirror today’s world.
I love writing small town and rural contemporary romance stories. While the conflicts and challenges of towns and ranch life may vary from those of big city life—the art of falling in love is always the same. In my Harbor Falls Romance Series, the happily-ever-afters are a requirement!
I also write more complicated and in-depth stories that fall into the women's fiction category--stories that share a woman's growth over time, leading to a satisfying ending for her (a happily ever after is not required, but a happy and gratifying ending is...).
For those who love a good thrill along with their romance, romantic suspense is the ideal subgenre. These novels blend romance with elements of mystery, crime, or espionage, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Authors like Sandra Brown and Karen Rose excel in creating gripping plots with high stakes and intense romantic chemistry. If you enjoy a fast-paced read with plenty of twists and turns, romantic suspense will keep you hooked.
Occassionally I trip over to the darker side of my brain and explore stories with romantic elements--but also graphic and thrilling scenes that might make the hairs on the back of your neck perk up. I write these books under the name of M.L. Jameson.
Paranormal romance introduces readers to a world where love transcends the boundaries of the natural. This subgenre features supernatural elements such as vampires, werewolves, witches, and other mystical beings. Popular series like J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood and Christine Feehan’s Carpathian series offer thrilling romances set in fantastical worlds. Paranormal romance is perfect for readers who crave adventure and otherworldly romance.
Erotic Romance
Erotic romance delves into the more passionate and intimate aspects of relationships. These novels focus on the sexual chemistry between characters while also developing a deep emotional connection. Authors like E.L. James, with her Fifty Shades series, and Sylvia Day, known for the Crossfire series, have popularized this subgenre. Erotic romance is perfect for readers who appreciate steamy love stories with emotional depth.
While I do not have in-depth series books in the erotic romance genre, I do have a few titles and short novellas that might fit the bill. Visit the taboo and naughty pages of my website!
Romantic Mystery
Lately, I'm seeing books that blend the mystery and romance genres. For me, this harkens back to some of the books I cut my teeth on, back in the day. Then, I devoured books by Phyllis Whitney and Phillippa Carr and Mary Stewert. While they were known as gothic romance, I loved them because of the allure of the mystery, and the hint of romance that hugged the story.
While I do not write gothic romance (Hm, maybe I should?) I do have a trilogy of romantic mystery stores--also with ghosts!
The romance genre is vast and varied, with subgenres that cater to every reader’s taste. Whether you’re in the mood for historical elegance, contemporary realism, thrilling suspense, or fantastical adventures, there’s a romance subgenre waiting to sweep you off your feet. Exploring these must-read subgenres will not only expand your reading horizons but also enrich your appreciation for the many facets of love.
